This full rss is powered by Adsense Id A former Clackamas County sheriff?s sergeant who survived a shooting eight years ago received an outpouring of support Monday after re�turning to the hospital for treatment of seizures, pneumonia and a blood infection. ��� Damon Coates, 50, was listed in serious condition in the intensive-care unit at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, where his wife, Tammy, is holding a bedside vigil. The Rev. Jim Andrews, senior pastor at Lake Bible Church in Lake Oswego, said he has made two hospital visits and remains in close contact with Tammy Coates. He said Damon Coates has been placed on antibiotics and anti-seizure medications. Physicians have trouble assessing Coates? condition, Andrews said, because bullet fragments in his head prohibit physicians from performing an MRI scan of his brain. Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts said news of Coates' downturn has jolted their ranks.

"This has been a tough time for all of us," Roberts said. "I'd just been talking with him the week before about helping him with a fundraiser he's working on. And now, this... Our hearts go out to Damon and his family."

Coates was shot point-blank in the face Jan. 9, 2003, while investigating a report that 15-year-old Nick Teixeira appeared to be exhibiting psychotic behavior. Coates, about to pat down Teixeira, asked him if he had anyweapons. Teixeira said no, then pulled out a stolen handgun and shot Coates inthe face.�� �The shooting left Coates permanently disabled, and he was forced to retire from law enforcement. After months of rehabilitation, he returned to his West Linn home, which had been remodeled to accommodate his disabilities.�� �?He?s been fighting seizures since the incident,? said West Linn Police ChiefTerry Timeus. ?The poor guy has had a battle since it happened. Recently, it looked like he was going to be able to enjoy some quality of life, before he wound up back in the hospital. We all just hope he recovers.?
