West Coast rapper Game has finally delivered up to eager fans' expectations by announcing plans to drop his long-awaited R.E.D. Album in late August.

Game said the release date was green lighted by Interscope Records CEO Jimmy Iovine.

"#alliwantis for my fans to know that the R.E.D. album will be in-stores AUGUST 23rd !!! Thanks for the continuous love & support. #REDnation," he tweeted Wednesday (May 17).

"Just got off a conference call with Jimmy Iovine & @interscope . Aug 23rd is the release date & it's like a FAT GIRL..... It won't move !" (Game's Twitter)

Earlier this month, Game promised to put the project out no later than August.

Game released "Purp & Patron," a 29-track mixtape, last January, but says that his fans' focus remains on the release of "R.E.D. Album," which has been pushed back for over a year. "I had a meeting with [Interscope head] Jimmy Iovine last week, and he told me the album was slated for the end of the summer, and it will not be pushed back any more than that. So we're looking towards late August," he says. (Billboard)

In April, Game said his LP was still awaiting Dr. Dre's contributions.

"[The] release date [is] probably late July or early August, man. I'll let [producer] Jimmy Iovine put that red paint on the calendar and give us a specific date," the Game said. "All I know is that the album is almost finished. Dre is finishing up Detox and then he going to help me finish up mine. I'm like 90, 95 percent done. Just waiting on Dre to finish his project and then come on over and lend his ear and probably mix a couple of songs, especially the ones that he did, and we're going to see it in stores." (MTV)

He recently cited his unreleased project as album of the year worthy.

"The 'R.E.D.' album is going to remind everybody of what hip-hop is supposed to be in its prime," says Game. "The 'R.E.D.' album will be the best album this year hands down. There's nobody putting out an album this year that will even be able to compete with the skill level-- the bar is gonna be set after this album drops. I guarantee it now from start to finish." (Billboard)

Game's R.E.D. Album will hit stores Tuesday, August 23rd.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn: A brilliant career, a stunning accusation

This full rss is powered by Adsense Id

Who is Dominique Strauss-Kahn?

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

Dominique Strauss-Kahn is known as a brilliant economist and tough politician He was seen as the likely Socialist opponent to Sarkozy next year Strauss-Kahn has a reputation as a womanizer The new accusations could have consequences for the IMF and the world economy

(CNN) -- He has been called "a great seducer" -- a politician whose relationships with women have landed him in trouble.

He's also known for his brilliant grasp of global economics and European politics.

But for Dominique Gaston Andre Strauss-Kahn -- head of the powerful International Monetary Fund and, until this weekend, presumptive front-runner for the presidency of France -- the most relevant issue today may be whether he can stay out of prison.

Strauss-Kahn, 62, is charged with chasing a hotel employee down the hall of his posh New York hotel suite on Saturday and sexually assaulting her.

Police allege he attacked the 32-year-old woman at Manhattan's Sofitel Hotel. Later in the day, authorities pulled him from his first-class seat on a Paris-bound flight minutes before its scheduled departure.

Now, instead of preparing to lead France's Socialist Party against Nicolas Sarkozy next year, he is preparing to defend himself against charges of attempted rape, unlawful imprisonment, forcible touching, and sexual abuse.

The arrest of Strauss-Kahn triggered intense political chatter across the Atlantic. In France, it delivered what the Paris newspaper Le Figaro called a "thunderclap" to the presidential race. And some at the headquarters of Strauss-Kahn's Socialist party were in tears Monday after the news.

The incident has also disrupted the rhythm of the IMF, which assists countries suffering economic difficulties by providing loans. Founded after World War II, the IMF is composed of 187 countries.

Politically, "it's over. He's done," said Simon Serfaty, a senior European analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank.

Strauss-Kahn "cannot recover," Serfaty told CNN.

It is, by any standard, a stunning fall for the man many presumed would be the next occupant of the Elysee Palace. It's also a cautionary tale for those who might forget how quickly sexual allegations can bring down even the most influential leaders.

Long before he ended up on the front pages of the tabloids, Strauss-Kahn was well-known to followers of global financial news.

The University of Paris-educated economist has headed the IMF for the duration of the current global financial crisis. In doing so, he has played a lead role in bailing out the economies of Greece and Ireland, as well as propping up Europe's currency, the euro.

"He was a strong and effective leader," said Tsung-Mei Cheng, a health policy research analyst at the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University. "He made the IMF not only effective, but credible."

Strauss-Kahn has been a force in French politics for a quarter century, first winning election to that country's National Assembly -- the lower house of parliament -- in 1986. He was President Francois Mitterrand's trade minister from 1991 to 1993, and went on to serve as finance minister in the late 1990s.

During that period, Paris joined the euro and ditched the franc.

Strauss-Kahn lost a fight with Segolene Royal for the Socialist Party's presidential nomination in 2006. One year later, he was named managing director of the IMF.

Married to his third wife and father of four children, he has also taught economics at Stanford University in California and at the prestigious Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris, known as Sciences Po.

"He is a very serious political figure as well as a senior economic and financial figure," noted Heather Conley, director of the Center for Strategic and International Studies' Europe program.

He "understands what needs to be done in terms of economics and what can be done in terms of politics," Serfaty said.

A dominant figure in the French left, Strauss-Kahn gained a reputation over the years as someone who enjoys a lavish lifestyle.

It was well-known that he is "not alien or indifferent to money," Serfaty said. He has "been interested in his earnings."

In 1999, after an allegation of unethical financial doings involving his consulting business, Strauss-Kahn resigned his ministerial post. He was acquitted of the charges.

As head of the IMF, Strauss-Kahn pulled in an annual tax-free salary of more than $420,000, according to a 2007 statement from the organization. He also received more than $75,000 for "a scale of living appropriate" to his position.

To the extent that there was a perceived conflict between his socialist political ideals and wealthy lifestyle, it wasn't an issue for most French voters, Serfaty asserted.

It is Strauss-Kahn's sexual reputation that is more relevant today.

Long before he found himself in legal trouble in the United States, there was "no question" that he "had a marked interest in the other sex," Serfaty said.

Political analysts routinely note that allegations of infidelity are generally much less likely to derail a political career in France than in America. There is simply a "different cultural context in France" to most sexual issues, Conley noted.

Strauss-Kahn became embroiled in sexual controversy soon after joining the IMF. He acknowledged reports that he'd had an improper physical relationship with a female employee. The relationship was consensual, an independent inquiry found.

The IMF's executive board concluded in October 2008 that "there was no harassment, favoritism or any other abuse of authority by the managing director."

Nevertheless, the board found "that the incident was regrettable and reflected a serious error of judgment," the IMF said in a written statement.

Strauss-Kahn issued a statement after the investigation, noting that he had "apologized for it to the (board of directors), to the staff of the IMF and to my family," as well as to the employee.

Strauss-Kahn's departure from the IMF would not leave a huge void, said Reginald Dale, a senior fellow in the Europe Program at the Center for Strategic and Intelligence Services, a Washington-based think thank. "If you fire the manager of a sports team, it still goes on playing while waiting for a new manager," he said. "Strauss-Kahn is not indispensable at the IMF."

Dale said Strauss-Kahn liked to be known by his initials -- as DSK. "Ever since JFK, which is the airport, ironically, at which he was arrested, French politicians and even intellectuals have loved to try to establish themselves with a three-initial moniker because it has that sort of ring of prestige." He cited the philosopher Bernard-Henri Levy, or BHL, as an example.

What is surprising to many observers is the new assertion that Strauss-Kahn -- a man with no criminal record -- physically forced himself on a woman.

"Like all Frenchmen, I was stupefied," said Michel Taubmann, who has written a biography of Strauss-Khan. "I was incredulous."

Taubmann, who recounted Strauss-Khan's amorous adventures in his book, described the economist as "a French lover ... a great seducer."

But the man he studied "could not be a rapist," Taubmann said.

"Imagine that that man, who is an extremely intelligent man, who is a great economist, who is a very nice man in his personal comportment, who is a father of a family, who is a grandfather," Taubmann told CNN.

"I can't believe that he could be sexually aggressive against a young woman as he is accused of doing in New York."

Yet, other charges against Strauss-Kahn are now surfacing in the wake of his arrest.

Anne Mansouret, a Socialist member of the French parliament, said Monday that Strauss-Kahn attacked her daughter in 2002.

Mansouret said she cautioned her daughter, Tristane Banon, not to file a police report at the time, saying it might adversely impact her career. At the time, Banon was an aspiring journalist.

CNN does not typically name assault victims, but Mansouret said her daughter gave permission for her name to be disclosed.

Strauss-Kahn was never charged. However, in light of the charges filed against Strauss-Kahn in the wake of the alleged incident in New York, Banon's attorney in France, David Koubbi, has said he and the young woman are considering whether to file a complaint.

Regardless, Strauss-Kahn has a number of defenders. Some supporters are grumbling about the incident in New York allegedly being a political "set-up."

Strauss-Kahn's attorney, Benjamin Brafman, insists his client will "quite likely" be exonerated.

While most Americans likely hadn't heard of Strauss-Kahn before this past weekend, his fall may prove to be of interest for reasons beyond the obvious.

At the time of Strauss-Kahn's arrest, the IMF was preparing for a critical meeting relating to a bailout for Portugal, an extension of the Greek bailout, and the selection of a new European Central Bank head, Conley noted.

Europe, a huge U.S. export market, currently holds nearly $3 trillion worth of U.S. Treasury bonds, Conley said. American banks hold $1.4 trillion in European debt.

The "worst-case scenario" is that Strauss-Kahn's removal as IMF head would lead to a "shock that sets the global economy back," she said. "We need to care about this issue."

W. Crew. Bears Capture Fourth Straight Pac-10 Women's Title

May 15, 2011

Top-ranked California won three of four races, including a half-second victory over Stanford in the varsity 8+ final, to capture its fourth consecutive Pac-10 championship Sunday on a cold, rainy morning at Lake Natoma outside Sacramento.

The Bears also prevailed in the varsity 4+ and novice 8+ and placed second in the second varsity 8+ to claim the title going away. Cal finished with 43.5 points in the team standings to second-place Stanford's 34.

"We knew we were going to be right there," head coach Dave O'Neill said. "Both Stanford and USC are fantastic crews. We've been coming along and doing pretty well. We knew that the water was going to get a little rough at times. We're not the biggest crew out there, but they definitely showed they've got a lot of heart and a lot of fight in them. I don't use the word epic too often, but that was an epic race."

See complete O'Neill interview

The skies opened up just as the crews reached the starting line for the varsity 8+ race, with driving rain pelting the course. Cal, though, led from the start and opened up a more than two-second advantage over the Cardinal with 500 meters to go. Although Stanford closed quickly, the Cardinal could not catch the Bears, who won in 7:02.1. Stanford was timed in 7:02.6 and third-place USC in 7:09.3.

The Cardinal and Bears were 1-2 throughout the second varsity 8+ with Stanford winning in 6:24.5 to Cal's 6:32.4

Cal charged to a two-second advantage over USC at the mid-point of the varsity 4+. Then when Washington passed the Trojans for second place, the Bears extended their lead to four seconds at the finish, 7:14.6 to 7:18.7.

Cal's freshman 8+ also led wire-to-wire and won by nearly seven seconds, 6:52.0 to Oregon State's 6:58.7.

The Bears have now taken the Pac-10 team title each of the last four years and seven of eight times since their first championship in 2004. Cal takes next week off before returning to the water for the NCAA Championships May 27-29, also at Lake Natoma.

No Heaven? Why Stephen Hawking's Comment Doesn't Matter

This full rss is powered by Adsense Id

Even though famed physicist Stephen Hawking announced he doesn't believe in an afterlife and that heaven is a "fairy story for people afraid of the dark," that doesn't mean we'll stop believing, psychologists say.

The statement by Hawking to the Guardian newspaper reflects the beliefs of plenty of nonreligious people, but will likely get more attention, coming as it does from Hawking, who is famous for his work in theoretical physics. Hawking has already drawn fire from some religious leaders with his assertion in his book "The Grand Design" (Bantam 2010) that the universe did not need God to get started. [8 Shocking Things We Learned from Hawking's Book]

"I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail," Hawking said Sunday in The Guardian. "There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark."

Fairy story or not, a belief in heaven does seem to come with some benefits. Humans didn't evolve in an environment where an understanding of black holes or the origin of the universe would be helpful, said Daniel Kruger, an evolutionary psychologist at the University of Michigan.

"We're not designed at the level of theoretical physics," Kruger told LiveScience. "What really matters to us is what happens at the human scale, relationships to other people, things we experience in a lifetime."

Rewards and reminders

For that reason, the idea of heaven has a stronger mystique than that of the seven imperceptible dimensions of string theory. On a personal level, Kruger said, the idea of an afterlife offers some hope in a world where, historically, "life has been pretty harsh." Thoughts of heaven may also stave off fears of death, he said.

Studies have shown that a belief in life after death seems to play that handholding role, said Nathan Heflick, a doctoral student in psychology at the University of South Florida who has studied belief in the afterlife.

"The more people believe, the less death anxiety they tend to have," Heflick told LiveScience.

Reminding people of death also prompts them to want to believe in the afterlife more, Heflick said, even if they remain skeptical.

Societal glue

On a societal level, religious belief in the afterlife can be a powerful motivator to follow the rules, Kruger said.

"When you have an afterlife that is influenced by the actions that you take now, you basically see a system of rewards and punishments," he said. Those rewards and punishments can keep people in line, or, more charitably, provide a way for humans to codify and pass along moral laws.

A belief in the afterlife may also arise from the perception that we are more than our bodies. In a series of experiments, Heflick and his colleagues subtly reminded people of their bodies ? by providing foot massages, for example ? while asking them about their thoughts on the afterlife. People undergoing a physical experience reminding them of their bodies were less likely to say they believed in life after death, while those distanced from their bodies showed a slight uptick in belief.

People's perceptions of themselves, then, may influence their belief in what happens after death.

"If you think of your body as a machine, it's kind of hard to believe in life after death," Heflick said. "You're not going to be able to think of yourself as a spirit."

Delta Goodrem, the 32-year-old Australian singer who broke off her engagement to Brian Mcfadden last month, has been spotted hand-in-hand with 18-year-old Nick Jonas, reports Hollywood Life. Delta Goodrem and Jonas were photographed leaving the ArcLight cinema in Los Angeles on Sunday (15th May 2011).

Following his reported relationships with 20-year-old Samantha Barks and 18-year-old Miley Cyrus, Jonas appears to have begun a romance with the Australian, a woman 8 years his senior. Earlier today, the Jonas Brothers star tweeted, "I feel so blessed. Had a great weekend". Goodrem, now one of the biggest recording artists in Australia, was previously engaged to the former Westlife singer Brian Mcfadden. Following his divorce from Kerry Katona, MCFadden began dating Goodrem in 2004 after they had collaborated on the duet 'Almost Here'. The couple announced their engagement on 29th November 2007 but split in April 2011 after dating for three years. At the time, MCFadden took to his Twitter page to confirm the break-up, saying, "I love Delta and always will. She is one of God's living angels. I thank her for giving me the best years of my life. Please give us time x".

Delta Goodrem released her last studio album, 'Delta', back in 2007. The album became her third consecutive record to debut at No. 1 in the Australian chart. She is expected to release her currently untitled fourth studio album, later this year.

HSA's urine tests comply with law, court rules

This full rss is powered by Adsense IdDrug consumption cases are typically heard in a district court but the case against Mohammad Ashik Aris, 30, was moved to the High Court, prompted by the acquittal of Mr Lim Boon Keong (above), 27, by Justice Steven Chong in June last year. -- ST PHOTO: CHEW SENG KIM

THE High Court on Tuesday ruled that the urine-testing procedures of the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) are according to the law, when it sentenced a part-time mover to 1-1/2 years in jail for abusing Ice.

Justice Chan Seng Onn found that the evidence produced in the 28-day trial 'clearly establishes the integrity of the DAT (drug abuse testing) laboratory's drug handling and standard testing procedures and their conformance with the requirements set out in the Misuse of Drugs Act'.

Drug consumption cases are typically heard in a district court but the case against Mohammad Ashik Aris, 30, was moved to the High Court, prompted by the acquittal of Mr Lim Boon Keong, 27, by Justice Steven Chong in June last year.

During Mr Lim's appeal against his conviction for taking norketamine, a ketamine-type drug, his lawyer S.K. Kumar argued that the HSA's urine-testing procedures had not conformed to requirements as spelt out under the Act.

While Justice Chong did not make any ruling about the HSA's procedures when he acquitted Mr Lim, he noted that the prosecution of a drug consumption offence should always be supported by expert evidence or certification in strict compliance with the requirements imposed by the Act.

Soon after that decision, the Attorney-General's Chambers had said some drug consumption cases had been adjourned, pending its obtaining a definitive ruling on the issue when all the relevant evidence was before the court.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn: A Frenchman sunk by a sex scandal?

This full rss is powered by Adsense Id

Alleged assault, however, is another matter entirely. ?If the whole situation isn?t exposed for being a political set-up in the next 24 to 48 hours,? French leading polling expert Stphane Rozs warns, ?Monsieur Strauss-Kahn?s political career is finished. He is, of course, presumed innocent until proven guilty, but even suspicion of attempted rape will make it impossible for him to stand.?

It is well worth noting that it took the long arm of New York?s finest to make the Strauss-Kahn scandal incontrovertible even to the very cagey French press. With the help of the internet ? the great difference with the Mitterrand years, where the average French voter was left ignorant of the president?s natural children, for instance, and stringent privacy laws were supplemented by thousands of illegal phone taps directly commandeered by his private office ? all the stories about his womanising have filtered down for years.

What is more surprising is that DSK has also been accused in the past of assault along eerily similar lines, if not as brutal as what the NYPD spokesman has alleged. Journalist and novelist Tristane Banon, a god-daughter of DSK?s second wife Brigitte Guillemette, recalled in a 2007 book, then in a TV chat show that same year, going to interview Strauss-Kahn to an address ?he gave me, neither his office nor his flat; an elegantly appointed studio, with a bed in an alcove?, in which, she said, he grabbed her, tore off her bra, and she only managed to escape after a serious scuffle. ?I kicked him, I called him a rapist, he didn?t seem to care,? she said. (DSK?s name was bleeped out in the chat show.)

Banon?s mother, Anne Mansouret, a Socialist local politician, confirmed the story yesterday to the respected website Le Post. Banon consulted a barrister, but finally decided not to sue, a decision her mother now regrets having encouraged her to do so. ?She was just starting out in journalism,? says Mansouret. ?I was afraid she?d be defined by this story.? She says her daughter will give a press conference ?in the coming days?.

Other instances may well resurface. Aurlie Filipetti, a respected Socialist MP and Marie-Sgolne Royal supporter, said in 2008 that she had been groped by DSK and would ?forever make sure? she was never ?alone in a room with him?.

And yet nobody among DSK?s spin doctors and advisers seemed to think this would blow up in the face of their candidate. In recent weeks, as the probability of his candidacy looked certain, and politicians and the press made hay of his taking a ride in a Porsche owned by his main adviser, Strauss-Kahn and his wife Anne Sinclair sued France-Soir, a Paris newspaper, for disclosing the benign fact that he had bought three suits from a French bespoke tailor in Washington, who also dressed several US presidents, for a sum estimated ?between $7,000 and $35,000 apiece. Looking rich ? he is in his own right and his wife, the granddaughter of one of France?s great art collectors, is even more wealthy ? was seen as infinitely more toxic.

On the other side of the divide, Nicolas Sarkozy?s team were rubbing their hands at the prospect of their own man?s taste for bling, Rolex watches and expensive pens being negated by DSK?s own tastes for luxury.

?What are holidays in my wife?s family house on the Mediterranean next to a three million franc riyad in Marakesh?? Sarkozy himself was reported to have said to Cabinet members.

When he was appointed to the IMF in 2007 with the support of Nicolas Sarkozy ? who saw a welcome opportunity of ridding himself of a dangerous opponent, at least for a time ? most DSK-watchers warned that Dominique, for all his sophistication and razor-sharp intelligence, would do well as head of the world?s economic watchdog, but might not realise the cultural gap between life in Paris and Washington. Sure enough, barely a year later, DSK?s affair with an IMF economist, the Hungarian Piroska Nagy, made international headlines.

Amazingly, he survived that crisis. It probably helped that the disclosures occurred exactly three days after the beginning of the financial meltdown, on October 18, 2008. After an internal inquiry, the IMF published findings that Strauss-Kahn, universally seen as a safe pair of hands in difficult times, had neither favoured his mistress, nor harassed her. Bowing to American mores, DSK apologised publicly to his high-profile wife, something he had never bothered to do before in France, and Ms Nagy soon afterwards took the opportunity of a well-compensated redundancy when DSK decided to bring cost-cutting home to the IMF, and shed 600 top jobs.

In the following years, he burnished his credentials as a hard-working boss, criss-crossing the globe to help bail out failing financial institutions and defaulting countries, all the while avoiding criticism from the Right or the Left ? he is one of the stars of the Oscar-winning documentary Inside Job, for instance, in which he details the work done to keep the economic sphere from exploding, and calls for more regulation of financial institutions in moderate, convincing tones.

Unlike most of France?s political elite, but like Nicolas Sarkozy ? and Marine Le Pen ? Strauss-Kahn is not a civil servant and a graduate of the top government school, ENA. He found himself, as finance minister, constantly sneered at by his supercilious mandarins for what was seen as his ?inferior? education, even though he has taught at Stanford and Harvard, and co-authored major economics books. When, between political mandates, he turned to the private sector to make a living, instead of sliding back effortlessly into a well-paid, guaranteed-for-life civil service job, he was derided for a supposed crass love of money. Helping to save the world economy and being constantly voted France?s most popular politician, on track for the presidency no less, was essential recognition at last.

But all this came to a crashing halt on Saturday, as DSK was walked out of the first-class cabin of Air France flight 23 sitting on the tarmac of JFK airport, to be arraigned at the Harlem Special Victims Unit of the NYPD, and subsequently charged with ?attempted rape, [a] criminal sexual act, and unlawful imprisonment?.

The French presidential race is wide open again, as DSK?s closest contender in the Socialist primaries, the lacklustre Franois Hollande, and Nicolas Sarkozy refrain from commenting for fear of appearing too eager to take advantage of their rival?s meltdown.

The only untroubled beneficiary is the Front National?s Marine Le Pen. ?I am utterly unsurprised,? she said yesterday. ?He must be presumed innocent - but everyone in the Paris political village knew of Dominique Strauss-Kahn?s pathologic relations with women.?

Ajax beat Twente to claim championship

This full rss is powered by Adsense Id

Ajax lifted the Eredivisie trophy for the first time since 2004 after a 3-1 victory in their title decider against FC Twente at the Amsterdam ArenA today.

Siem de Jong drilled them in front and Denny Landzaat's own goal put the hosts two goals up early in the second half.

Theo Janssen quickly pulled a goal back but De Jong scored his second and Ajax's third to ensure there was no repeat of the late drama which saw Twente snatch victory in last week's KNVB Beker final between the same two sides.

"Our success is deserved," said Ajax coach Frank de Boer, who celebrated his 41st birthday today. "But we couldn't predict the outcome of this match, or the championship. Football can be so random. But things fell in our favour."

We couldn't predict the outcome of this match, or the championship. Football can be so random. But things fell in our favour.

Frank de Boer, Ajax coach

"Ajax put us under pressure and we never managed to free ourselves," said Twente coach Michel Preud'homme. "We're disappointed but the season overall was splendid. After winning the title last season, we had to re-construct a completely new team.

"Twente win the cup, reach the Europa League quarter-finals and finish second in the league. All things considered, it's a great season."

Ajax, one point behind their title rivals at the start of play, threatened through Miralem Sulejmani's drive over the bar before De Jong gave them the lead in the 23rd minute.

Gregory van der Wiel delivered a lofted cross from the right and De Jong expertly took the ball out of the air at the far post before thumping home from close range.

Landzaat went close at the right end in the 34th minute when he met Nacer Chadli's cross with a well-struck right-footed effort which flashed just wide.

Ajax put us under pressure and we never managed to free ourselves. We're disappointed but the season overall was splendid.

Michel Preud'homme, FC Twente coach

It turned sour for the midfielder a minute after the interval though, when he inadvertently diverted another Van der Wiel delivery past his own goalkeeper, Nikolay Mihaylov, to leave Twente 2-0 down.

They had trailed by the same scoreline in last week's cup final before hitting back to level the game at 2-2 and win it in extra time courtesy of Marc Janko's late header.

Janssen scored the equaliser on that occasion and he raised immediate hopes of a repeat performance today when he ran on to Bryan Ruiz's carefully weighted through ball and steered a shot into the bottom corner with his left foot.

There was to be no grand turnaround this time, though, and De Jong staved off a potentially nervous end to the game when Christian Eriksen played him in one-on-one with Mihaylov and he produced a composed finish to leave the bulk of the 47,000-strong crowd celebrating an overdue title.

Puerto Rican population up 138% from 2000 census

This full rss is powered by Adsense Id

PASCAGOULA -- Gustavo and Susan Santo left Puerto Rico five years ago to live their American dream in Mississippi.

They?re part of the growing number of Puerto Ricans who have settled in the three Coast counties in the last 10 years, according to 2010 census demographic profiles being released today.

The 2000 census showed 1,304 Puerto Ricans in Harrison, Hancock and Jackson counties. In a decade, their population has more than doubled, with the 2010 census recording 3,098 Puerto Ricans living on the Coast now. That?s an increase of almost 138 percent.

JOHN FITZHUGH/SUN HERALD Susan and The Rev. Gustavo Santos of Pascgoula and their children, Susanah, 4, and twins, Diego and Saulo, 2, are part of the growing Puerto Rican population in South Mississippi.

It?s still a rather small figure, when compared with the Coast?s total population, said Clifford Holley, a demographer with the Center for Population Studies at University of Mississippi. But the growth in Puerto Rican residents is more than what would occur naturally, he said.

Puerto Ricans moving to the Coast are typically young and either follow friends and family here or know someone established in a community, he said.

For the Santoses, both were true.

Gustavo Santos, 37, listened to his cousin?s promises of higher-paying jobs. Though his cousin lived in Ocean Springs, Santos picked Pascagoula so he?d be closer to the shipyards.

Susan Santos, 34, was pregnant at the time with Susannah, who is now 4.

They also have 2-year-old twins, Saulo and Diego.

Gustavo Santos works as a shipfitter at Halter Marine in Pascagoula, a few minutes from his family.

He is also a pastor at Iglesia El Taller del Maestro, a Hispanic church in Pascagoula that offers three services each week.

The church has outgrown its surroundings four times since it was organized.

Santos also leads a Bible study Thursday nights at Crossroads Church in Ocean Springs. Susan Santos was born in Connecticut to Puerto Rican parents, but was reared on the islands. When she married Gustavo seven years ago, she shared with him her dream of raising a family in ?the states.?

?We never imagined we would be pastoring here,? she said. ?We think it was the Lord who moved us here because of the growing population.?

The majority of their congregation is from Puerto Rico, as well. The availability of higher-wage jobs is a huge draw for them, she said.

?Wherever there?s a job that pays more than $15 an hour, that?s appealing to anyone from Puerto Rico,? she said.

Santos wanted better education for her children, and safer neighborhoods. She found both in Jackson County, she said.

And because Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, moving here is like crossing a state line. There are no visas or border patrol issues to deal with. ?You just find a place to live and get a job,? she said.

For the Santos family, Mississippi is home.

?We love Puerto Rico. It?s beautiful and we love our family, but the church is growing so fast and there are so many beautiful people in our lives that we?re not thinking of going back,? she said. ?This is considered home right now.?

IMF Chief Strauss-Kahn Charged With Attempted Rape in New York

This full rss is powered by Adsense Id May 15, 2011, 4:15 AM EDT

By Karen Freifeld and Sandrine Rastello

May 15 (Bloomberg) -- Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the head of the International Monetary Fund and a potential candidate for the French presidency next year, was charged with attempted rape and a criminal sex act in New York, the police said today.

The charges stem from an incident that allegedly occurred yesterday against a 32-year-old woman at a Sofitel hotel in midtown Manhattan, the New York Police Department said in an e- mailed statement early today. Strauss-Kahn was arrested on an Air France flight at John F. Kennedy airport, the police said. He also has been charged with unlawful imprisonment.

Strauss-Kahn, 62, will appear in a Manhattan court later today, New York Police Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne told BBC television in an interview. He will plead not guilty, Strauss- Kahn?s lawyer Benjamin Brafman said, according to Reuters.

Strauss-Kahn had been scheduled to attend a meeting of euro area finance ministers in Brussels tomorrow. The meeting will take place as officials discuss the possible increase of a 110- billion ($155-billion) loan package to Greece amid concerns the country may be unable to return to markets to finance its debt next year.

?For the fund, this is terrible news at a time when its leadership needs to portray stability, wisdom, and confidence,? Bessma Momani, a professor in the department of political science at the University of Waterloo in Canada, who specializes in the IMF and its policies, said in an e-mail.

The IMF ?remains fully functioning and operational? following Strauss-Kahn?s arrest, the Washington, DC-based organization said in a statement on its website today.

Retains Lawyer

?Mr. Strauss-Kahn has retained legal counsel, and the IMF has no comment on the case; all inquiries will be referred to his personal lawyer and to the local authorities,? Caroline Atkinson, the director of external relations at the IMF, said in the statement.

New York police said Strauss-Kahn doesn?t have diplomatic immunity.

Strauss-Kahn, a former French finance minister and member of France?s opposition Socialist Party, has consistently been among the most popular possible candidates to contest France?s 2012 presidential election, opinion polls show.

President Nicolas Sarkozy would have trailed Strauss-Kahn by 5 percentage points in the first round of the presidential voting if the election had been held at the end of last month, a CSA poll for 20 Minutes newspaper, BFM Television and RMC radio showed April 28.

Strauss-Kahn, whose term at the IMF expires next year, over the last several months has declined to say whether he was planning to run for president. The vote will be held in April and May 2012.

2008 Relationship

This is the second time since he took the helm of the IMF in November 2007 that Strauss-Kahn has faced allegations of misconduct.

In 2008, he had a relationship with Piroska Nagy, a female economist at the IMF, who quit in August of that year. An investigation by the IMF board, released in October 2008, concluded that while he had made a ?serious error of judgment,? he shouldn?t be fired.

Strauss-Kahn apologized to his staff and family, which includes his third wife, French television journalist Anne Sinclair, and four children from his previous marriages.

?For fund critics and challengers of Western leadership in international financial institutions, this is emblematic of poor judgment and may further motivate them to call for serious changes in management,? Momani said.

Succession

Last month, officials from the Group of 24, which includes Brazil, China and Mexico, repeated a call for ?an open, transparent, merit-based process? for choosing the heads of the World Bank and IMF, ?without regard to nationality.? The IMF job is traditionally held by a European, while an American leads the World Bank.

Strauss-Kahn took the helm of the IMF in November 2007, following his loss in the primaries of the French Socialist Party ahead of the 2007 presidential elections.

Strauss-Kahn, who succeeded Spain?s Rodrigo Rato, has helped reshape the agency?s mission and restore its relevance. When he arrived, its emergency lending dropped to $58.7 million in 2006 from $66.4 billion in 2002. Among his first moves there was to cut about 400 jobs.

The global financial panic triggered by the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. in September 2008 restored the Washington-based IMF?s relevance as its emergency loans soared to a record of $91.7 billion last year from $1.1 billion in 2007.

European Crisis

Strauss-Kahn gained backing from the Group of 20 to triple the IMF?s resources, and the group has over the past two years given the agency a host of new missions to help avoid another crisis. The IMF is helping the G-20 single out countries whose policies threaten global growth, and has also submitted proposals to fortify the international monetary system.

More recently, he played a key role in efforts to stem the European debt crisis which started last year in Greece, with a pledge to contribute about a third of future bailouts in the region by the European Union. The IMF has co-funded aid packages to Greece and Ireland. He was due to meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel today.

Under Strauss-Kahn, the IMF also approved a plan that will make China the third-strongest voice in the 187-member organization, founded in 1945, while weakening Europe?s influence to make room for emerging countries.

Strauss Kahn has juggled careers as an economics professor, lawyer and Socialist politician. He holds a law degree and a doctorate in economics from the University of Paris.

In 1986, he was elected to the National Assembly and served as industry minister from 1991 to 1993. He returned to office as finance minister under Premier Lionel Jospin in 1997. He cut France?s budget deficit to below 3 percent in 1999, the level required for euro membership.

In November 1999, he resigned as finance minister after magistrates began an investigation into financial irregularities at MNEF, a French student insurance group. The probe covered an allegation that the company had paid him about $100,000 from 1994 to 1996 for legal work on a property deal that he never performed. Strauss-Kahn denied wrongdoing and was cleared by a Paris court in November 2001.

Census Figures: Puerto Ricans Gaining in Polk

This full rss is powered by Adsense Id

Published: Thursday, May 5, 2011 at 12:38 a.m.Last Modified: Thursday, May 5, 2011 at 12:38 a.m.

LAKELAND | North Lakeland may some day be known as Little San Juan.

The number of Polk County residents of Puerto Rican heritage surged between 2000 and 2010, according to newly released U.S. Census Bureau figures. Though residents of Mexican ancestry still dominate the county's Hispanic population, Puerto Ricans are closing the gap.

Among Polk's 602,095 residents, nearly 35,000, were identified in 2010 as having Puerto Rican origins. That marked a 224 percent increase from 2000.

Overall, people who identified themselves as Latino or Hispanic accounted for 17.7 percent of Polk's population in 2010, up from 9.5 percent a decade earlier. That total of 106,532 made Hispanics the largest minority in Polk County.

The population with Mexican ancestry numbered 45,725, up 79.5 percent since 2000. That group comprised 7.6 percent of the total county population, compared with 5.8 percent for those of Puerto Rican descent.

The dramatic increase in those of Puerto Rican origin came as no surprise to Ana Rivera de Ramos, president of the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Polk County. Rivera, a native of Puerto Rico, moved to Polk County in 2002.

Rivera, a college admissions counselor, said much of the influx is coming from other parts of Florida. She said Puerto Ricans are fleeing the congestion of the Orlando area for Polk County, particularly North Lakeland ? where she lives ? and Polk City.

"Lakeland is more similar to what we're looking for when we're looking at communities," Rivera said. "It's smaller, less expensive, quieter and Christian-based."

Rivera said Polk County will become even more appealing for Puerto Rican natives in November, when Direct Air begins offering nonstop flights from Lakeland Linder Regional Airport to San Juan, Puerto Rico's capital.

The number of Polk residents of Cuban origin increased 206 percent to 6,992 in 2010. Those listed as "other" in the Hispanic/Latino category numbered 18,990, or 3.2 percent of Polk residents.

The census figures showed great variations throughout Polk County. Those of Puerto Rican descent outnumbered Mexican-Americans 19,055 to 927 in the Poinciana area and 4,375 to 534 in the Four Corners area.

By contrast, Bartow, Fort Meade, Haines City, Lake Wales and Wahneta had significantly more residents who identified themselves as Mexican rather than Puerto Rican. In Wahneta, a largely migrant community, the difference was 2,978 to 72, respectively.

Lakeland had the highest concentration of Cuban-Americans, which made up 12.7 percent of its total Hispanic population.

The rising percentage of Latinos is having an effect in schools. The Polk County School District serves 11,334 students in its English for Speakers of Other Languages program, with the majority of them in elementary schools, said Gary Pratt, a teacher resource specialist. Pratt said 65 percent to 75 percent come from Spanish-speaking families.

Florida law requires public school instruction to be conducted in English. Pratt said the district has translators for parents who don't speak English.

Arthur Martinez, principal at Fort Meade Middle-Senior High School, said nearly 40 percent of his students are Latinos, mainly of Mexican ancestry. Martinez, a native of Cuban, is fluent in Spanish, as are several staff members.

The Polk School District also operates dual-language programs in five elementary schools, with instruction split between English and another language, said Tamara Salgado, curriculum coordinator for world languages. The program, one of only a few in the state, serves about 800 students, Salgado said.

Those identified as black or African-American made up 14.8 percent of Polk's population, compared with 13.5 percent in 2000. Blacks comprised 27.7 percent of the population in Winter Haven, 27.5 percent in Haines City, 23.7 percent in Bartow and 20.9 percent in Lakeland.

Whites overwhelmingly outnumbered blacks in the small communities of Homeland (356 to five), Hillcrest Heights (244 to seven) and Highland Park (210 to seven).

Brock Lesnar pulls out of UFC fight

This full rss is powered by Adsense Id

Toronto? The Canadian Press Published Thursday, May. 12, 2011 5:43PM EDT Last updated Thursday, May. 12, 2011 7:11PM EDT

Brock Lesnar has pulled out of his UFC 131 fight in Vancouver to deal with diverticulitis again.

The former UFC heavyweight champion was hospitalized by the digestive disorder in November 2009 but recovered and returned to mixed martial arts.

The 33-year-old fighter says his condition is not as serious as it was before. And his hope is to be able to keep fighting.

?But let me tell you, my health and my family are more important than stepping in the Octagon for I don't care how much money,? he told a conference call Thursday.

?One thing I have found out through all of this is that if you don't have your health and your family, you don't have diddly-squat.?

Lesnar (5-2) said his choice is to undergo surgery to remove part of his colon or deal with the disorder the rest of his life.

?There's a solution to every problem,? the six-foot-three 265-pounder said. ?I've just got to find the right solution to fix this problem. I love this sport and I love what I do.

?This isn't the end of Brock Lesnar. This is a speed bump in the road and trust me I've incurred a lot of speed bumps throughout my career.?

Still, Lesnar said he told his wife about a week ago: ?I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired. We've got to find a solution to this.?

In 2009, Lesnar fell ill on a hunting trip in Manitoba and eventually spent 11 days in hospital and lost 42 pounds.

In January 2010, he announced a ?miracle? recovery, saying his U.S. doctors ? who wanted to operate to remove part of his colon ? were ?dumbfounded? at his success in beating diverticulitis.

?I dodged a bullet,? he said Thursday.

Shane Carwin will replace Lesnar in the UFC 131 main event against Brazilian Junior Dos Santos at the Rogers Arena. The winner will get the next shot at heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.

Lesnar, who lost his title to Velasquez last October at UFC 121, said he was angry and frustrated at having to step aside.

?But my health and my family are more important, so let's keep things in perspective,? he said.

Lesnar, who has more follow-up doctor appointments, said he needs to learn more about the surgery before making his decision.

?It's got to be better than what I've been dealing with for the last two years,? he said. ?I'm looking for the light at the end of the tunnel here.

Lesnar is a relative novice at the sport, but won the UFC title in November 2008 in only his fourth pro fight. The former NCAA wrestling champion and pro wrestling star remains one of MMA's biggest draws.

Carwin, who lost to Lesnar in his comeback fight last July at UFC 116, was originally scheduled to face Jon Olav Einemo on the UFC 131 card.

?Junior is a serious fight and not the type of fight that you would normally take on a 30 day notice but I have a dream to chase and I do not have a lot of time to chase it,? Carwin wrote on his website. ?This is an opportunity to put myself in contention for the title.

?I hope Brock is able to recover,? he added. ?I look forward to facing him again one day.?

Diverticulitis develops from diverticulosis, which involves the formation of pouches or diverticula on the outside of the colon. Diverticulitis results if the diverticula becomes inflamed.

?The diverticula, they never disappear. It's whether or not they become inflamed and infected,? Lesnar explained. ?And that's the problem. That's where I'm at.?

He said he had been able to maintain his condition ?to a point where it's tolerable.? He went through two training camps (for Carwin and Velasquez) without symptoms although he said he did not feel the same fighter.

Brock Lesnar is suffering from diverticulitis againand has withdrawn from his fight against Junior dos Santos at UFC 131 on June 11.

Fabforum "I dodged a bullet about two years ago with diverticulitis by not having the surgery," Lesnar said on UFC.comon Thursday. "But diverticulitis is an illness that never goes away. It?s something that I?ve dealt with since my first occurrence and have been battling with it.... I?ve been dealing with some symptoms over the last three months, and during the course of this training camp, I felt another infection and got a CT scan done on my stomach, where there was visible inflammation. It didn?t allow me to train to my full capabilities, and I was forced to make a decision to go back down to the doctor this week to figure out how far this thing was along. It?s not as serious as last time. It just didn?t allow me to train the way I needed to train for a No. 1 contender?s bout."

Lesnar wentto the Mayo Clinic on Wednesday to consult with doctors, who advised him to pull out of the fight.

"I will tell you one thing, I'm not retiring. This isn't the end of my fight career. This is something that I believe, and I have strong faith, that there's a solution to every problem. I just have to find a solution to fix this problem. I love this sport and I love what I do. This isn't the end of Brock Lesnar. This is a speed bump in the road."

Hands On With the Samsung Chromebook Series 5

This full rss is powered by Adsense Id

Hang on, folks, because mobile computing has just got a bit more interesting. Google?s Chrome OS is finally ready for the wild--two years after its launch?and the Samsung Chromebook Series 5, due out on June 15, will be one of two laptops to showcase Google?s Web-based operating system.

When Chrome OS was first announced two years ago, I wondered if we really needed another mobile OS. Many of my questions still stand, especially given the runaway success of Android. But after taking the Samsung Chromebook Series 5 for a spin tonight, I was pleasantly surprised to see how far some aspects of the laptop and its OS have come.

From the outside, the Chromebook looks like any other ultralight laptop, save for the Google Chrome logo on the outside cover. It measures 11.6 by 8.6 by 0.8 inches, compact, but not especially svelte.

Its weight doesn?t impress, either. At 3.3 pounds, it?s no featherweight like the Apple MacBook Air; however, at least the Chromebook felt deceptively lighter than it is, a phenomenon I?d credit to how well-balanced the laptop felt in hand. I was surprised by how easily I could grip the Chromebook in one hand, actually.

One of the big selling points of Chromebook is its near-instant-on capability. It starts up in under 10 seconds from a cold boot, and it's ready to use as soon as you open the lid to wake it from sleep. The latter mirrors the sense of immediacy one gets with a Google Android 3.0 tablet, but that cold boot time remains an important differentiator. Android continues to have overhead bottlenecks that cause startup and shutdown times to take some time. None of the Android 3.0 tablets I?ve tested have wowed me with their boot times; and for a couple, I literally was able to grab some iced tea and down half of it before the tablet came to life again.

While some of the Chromebook?s startup zippiness has to be credited to the design of Google?s Chrome OS, some of it, perhaps, could be due to the components inside. The Series 5 actually runs components that echo today?s netbooks: It has a 1.66GHz dual-core Intel Atom N570 processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 16GB mSATA SSD (used for caching data locally). Those specs are meatier than what you?ll find in an Android tablet today.

Physical connectivity on the Series 5 Chromebook is minimal. All ports along the sides are tucked away beneath covers, except for a lone USB 2.0 port at the far right rear of the laptop. You get an SDHC card slot at front, another USB 2.0 port beneath a cover at the left, a video-out port, and a full-size SIM card slot (on the 3G-capable white and titanium models). The 3.5mm headphone jack doubles as a microphone input as well; and the Chromebook has a 1-megapixel Webcam for video chat.

The island-style keyboard felt very roomy and comfortable for my touch-typist fingers. I liked the smooth and roomy trackpad as well; it wasn?t stiff, as I?ve found with other touchpads that double as the mouse buttons. The keyboard swaps out the function keys of yore for a row of browser-friendly keys, though the idea of having navigation buttons like page back, page forward, refresh, and new window situated so far up on the keyboard seems like it may be counterproductive (I?d prefer such keys to be more handily situated, but I?ll need more time with the laptop to tell how well they work in practice).

I was encouraged at the Google I/O keynote introducing the Chromebook to hear about the file manager that?s been added to Chromebook. I?ve been tracking the challenges of native file handling in mobile operating systems, and was eager to give this feature a try on Chromebook.

My torture test was simple: I pulled out a random USB drive and attached it to the USB port. Chrome OS quickly recognized external storage was attached, and up popped the file manager as another tab in the Chrome browser on-screen. I was able to view my folders and files, select a file, preview the image in a pane at right, or double-click to open the image.

The high-resolution images didn?t always automatically resize to fit the screen (as they do when you double-click on a photo in Microsoft Windows Explorer and open it Window Photo Viewer), but they looked good on the 12.1-inch, 1280 by 800 pixel display. Really good. Colors were vibrant and accurately rendered--no small trick, as we?ve seen from Android 3.0?s snafus. The file manager remains limited for now--the version I used lacked the ability to do basic file copy functions--but a Google rep promised that functionality will be in place soon.

While nosing around the Chrome OS interface, I looked at how apps appear in the Chrome browser (see the image above) I also tried replicating my usual Web browsing experience in the Chromebook?s Chrome browser. (Hrm. I think I just tested how many times one can put Chrome into a sentence.) The usage I was trying to gauge here was the scenario that sees 30-some-odd tabs open simultaneously--and that?s just in one window. While I learned about a couple of interface shortcuts, like jumping to a different tab by pressing the tab number and a key combo, while talking with Google reps about this scenario, I learned that right now, it?s not easy to move among scores of open tabs. Those tabs were reduced down to tiny tabs with just ??? as a tab identifier?and that?s no way to figure out what?s actually on that tab.

Considering these tabs will, in the Chrome OS universe, represent your open documents, media files, applications, and Web pages, this is an interface challenge that Google will need to crack, and soon. Google reps said that several approaches are being considered, but nothing has been nailed down as yet. Of course, this is where Chromebook and Chrome OS?s regular updates, currently scheduled for once every six weeks, will come in handy.

I?m not convinced that everyone will want, or even need, a Chromebook. But what I saw so far looks to have promise. And with pricing for Samsung?s models starting at $430 for the Wi-Fi version, and $499 for the 3G version, the Chromebok looks set to give standard netbooks and ultralight laptops some new competition.

Hundreds queue for food after Spanish earthquake

LORCA, Spain (Reuters) - Hundreds of people queued for food Thursday from emergency workers in the Spanish town of Lorca, prevented from returning to their homes damaged by an unusually strong earthquake that killed eight people.

The mayor of the southern town, Francisco Jodar, told reporters as many as a third of Lorca's 90,000 residents spent the night outdoors after Wednesday's 5.3 magnitude earthquake.

The number of fatalities was revised down from an earlier report of 10.

"We spent the night outside here in the square. The emergency workers are giving us food and blankets. We're not allowed to go into our apartment until an engineer comes and looks at our building," said Edgar Rosales, 38, an Ecuadorian immigrant.

Rosales said the earthquake jolted groceries off the shelves of his Latin American food store and had hit his daughters.

"The important thing is that we're all okay. We're all here together now," Rosales said.

The ruling Socialist party and the center-right opposition Popular Party suspended campaign rallies throughout Spain for the May 22 regional and local elections out of respect for the victims of the earthquake.

Masonry and rubble filled some streets in Lorca, which dates back to Roman times and also has some medieval structures. Many cars were crushed by the quake that struck at 6:46 p.m. (1646 GMT).

A military task force of 200 troops was sent to the area to provide aid and cordon off dangerous buildings. Part of the front of a badly damaged church collapsed hours after the quake and other buildings were considered unstable.

Earthquakes causing extensive damage and fatalities are rare in Spain although the south of the country has extensive faultlines. The U.S. Geological Survey registered one dead in a 1997 earthquake.

In 1969 a 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed 19 people in the southern town of Huelva, according to Spain's National Geographic Institute.

It's Fight Week in the Lock City

This full rss is powered by Adsense Id

LOCKPORT ? In the ever spontaneous world of combat sports unforeseen and wild events tend to happen from time to time.

Saturday?s professional fight card at the Kenan Center Arena is no exception.

With under a week to go in the mega bout between Lockport?s Amer Abdallah and Florida?s Trei Scott (11-0), the Scott camp has confirmed their withdrawal from the fight on Saturday for no specific reason.

?As unsettling and unprofessional as this situation is, we?ve had to move on and focus on another opponent,? matchmaker Andre Hahn of Lace Up Promotions stated. ?We will revisit all of the legal implications after May 14th? With other names in the light heavyweight mix, Amer Abdallah took it a step further.

?I wanted a good, tough fight to give my Western New York fans,? said Abdallah (9-0).

?I spoke with (trainer) Corey (Webster) and made a decision to step up to the next weight class and take on the big boys.?

Lace Up Promotions has signed 6-feet, 4-inch, 215-pound Jerald ?The Gettoblaster? Johnson of Milwaukee Wisconsin as Abdallah?s challenge in Saturday night?s main event.

Johnson (19-4) just won a fight in February by stopping his opponent in the third round. He took the Abdallah fight with open arms and no hesitation.

?We knew he would take it due to our size and experience difference,? Abdallah stated.

Team Abdallah manager Lizz Bouchard, advisor ?Baby? Joe Mesi and strength and conditioning coach Gina Nowak became aware of Abdallah?s decision just days ago on a live segment of Sports Magazine with Jim Slowey.

?Unfortunately, these things happen in boxing? Mesi said. ?Amer is stepping it up and is going to give the fans a heck of a show on Saturday.?

Bouchard said, ?It took us all by surprise and I was hesitant at first, but I believe in Amer and his skills. He wants this fight and regardless of anyone?s thoughts, he?ll do what he wants anyway. Our job is to support him.?

Abdallah?s team has already made some drastic changes in camp as they?ve brought in taller sparring partners in the final week of preparation.

?We?ve been working on many of the same tools Amer will use for Johnson. It?s minor adjustments that we?re focusing on. We?re going to blast the ?Ghettoblaster,?? Webster said.

Former trainer Juan Deleon recently flew into Buffalo from Puerto Rico, where he?s preparing undefeated welterweight Felix Mercedes (11-0) for an upcoming fight. Deleon spent time in the Abdallah camp assisting Webster in fine tuning the game plan for a taller, bigger and more experienced opponent.

In a surprising move, Abdallah has requested a smaller ring to fight in.

?I don?t want to give him the idea that I?m going to run from him. He has to be prepared to die in that ring just as I am. This is sheer warfare. I?m going to walk him down and slay Goliath,? Abdallah said.

Weigh-ins for the event will be open to the public and conducted at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Finnan?s Bar & Grill on Lincoln Avenue.

Also added to the card is former Muay Thai middleweight ?Smokin? Joe Pagan, who will be fighting Canadian superstar Jeremy Savoy in a middleweight title fight. Pagan, a principal at the BOCES LoGuidice Center in Fredonia, is stepping out of his role as a school administrator, father and husband to claim his coveted title.

Newfane?s Brian Irr will take on tough Canadian Michael Sherwood of Dayboll?s Jui Jitsu. Irr, who has captured several martial arts titles, is making the transition to full contact kickboxing.

Local Edge CEO Jeff Folckemer has announced that the first 500 spectators to walk through the doors on Saturday will be entered to win their choice of either a $1,000 college scholarship or a free IPAD. Folckemer, a major supporter of Team Abdallah, bought all spectators free pizza at the last fight event in July.

Tickets are available at Ticketmaster (800-745-3000) or at the Lockport Athletic & Fitness Club (439-5232). For updates, visit www.laceuppromotions.com or the Lace Up Promotions facebook page.
